I gave AI an Eve return mission in Kerbal Space Program. Build the rocket, fly it, and bring the Kerbal home. The return part caused a few problems.
ChatGPT had to design the spacecraft and write the kOS flight scripts to fly it autonomously, from launch on Kerbin to landing on Eve and getting back again.
It missed burns. It blew up engines. At one point, it landed successfully on Eve, then ruined the landing by time warping on the surface. So we went through the logs, fixed what broke, and sent another rocket.
This video follows the attempts, the failures, and the fixes as AI takes on rocket design, orbital mechanics, atmospheric entry, and the problem of launching back out of Eve’s thick atmosphere.
Can it learn enough from its mistakes to get our Kerbal home?
