Historical fragments suggest that Dionysius the Elder of Syracuse built a weapon over 2,400 years ago capable of firing arrows automatically using a hand-cranked chain drive mechanism, and Adam and Jamie took those fragments seriously enough to reconstruct the entire thing from scratch, building the reloading mechanism from sprockets and chain, taking the prototype to a field for testing, watching it repeatedly break down, engineering it further, adding wheels for battlefield mobility and an angle finder for trajectory, and then bringing in Brady Ellison, a professional Olympic archer, to set a benchmark for what a trained human can do so MythBusters could find out whether an ancient Greek engineer had actually built something that could compete with the most skilled archers alive.
