In 1977, a physicist lost a game of darts in a Geneva pub. The joke he was

forced to publish is now the most serious number in all of physics.

One hundred meters beneath the French countryside, inside the largest machine

ever built, one specific particle decay is quietly refusing to obey the laws

of physics. Physicists have checked the number sixteen thousand ways. Two

separate machines see it. Twelve years of attempts to kill it have failed.

Either the most successful theory in human history has a crack in it, or

something is fooling two experiments at once. Both answers change everything.
