In the early 12th century, around 1119, a small group of knights founded the Order of the Temple in Jerusalem, forming a unique brotherhood devoted to protecting Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land. Officially recognized by the Church at the Council of Troyes in 1129, the Knights Templar quickly gained influence. As both monks and warriors, they lived under strict religious rules while fighting in the Crusades, becoming one of the most respected military orders of the Middle Ages.

By the mid-12th and 13th centuries, the Templars had expanded across Europe, building a vast network of fortresses, lands, and financial operations. They developed advanced systems for managing money, allowing pilgrims and nobles to deposit and transfer wealth securely across long distances. Their growing power and independence made them key players not only in warfare but also in politics and early banking, turning the order into one of the most influential institutions of medieval Europe.

However, their immense wealth and autonomy also made them vulnerable. On Friday, October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the mass arrest of the Templars, accusing them of heresy and corruption. Under pressure, the order was dismantled, and its leaders executed, including Grand Master Jacques de Molay in 1314. Within just a few years, the powerful brotherhood was erased, leaving behind one of the most dramatic and controversial downfalls in history.
