Tolkien said the Men of the Sea sent a black hail tipped with steel. So naturally I built the hail, found the orc armor, and asked a heavy warbow to settle it.

This is a Númenórean steel-bow deep dive and a full-send test of those legendary 4-foot black-feathered arrows. Unfinished Tales. Second Age. King’s Archers. Hollow steel. An ell from point to notch. The quote every lore nerd knows: the Númenóreans send before them a great cloud, as of rain turned to serpents. We are going to see if that cloud can punch a hole in orcish plate… or if Professor Tolkien was just flexing on paper.

We go into the books, not the vibes. What a hollow steel bow would actually have to be. Why a 4-foot arrow is a monster on the string. Why Númenóreans being 6’4” to 7-foot walking siege engines matters for draw weight. Why yew, horn, sinew, and spring steel are not the same animal. And yes, we take a couple of extremely polite, historically sourced potshots at The Rings of Power for forgetting that the terror of Númenor was supposed to be height, steel, and a sky full of arrows… not “elf politely bumps into man.”

Then we stop talking and shoot.

Heavy warbow. Long arrows. Orc-style armor. Can a book-accurate shaft do what the legend claims, or does Middle-earth physics tap out when it meets steel and a breastplate?
