Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have reached a critical point as Iran’s attempt to blockade the Strait of Hormuz spectacularly collapses. The IRGC tried to spark a global energy crisis by deploying Maham-class sea mines, kamikaze drones, and fast-attack boat swarms to block one of the world’s most strategic oil routes. But the United States and its allies were fully prepared.
Through a devastating two-phase operation known as “Operation Epic Fury,” the U.S. Navy and Air Force dismantled the Iranian blockade with precision. Underground missile silos were obliterated by GBU-72 bunker-buster bombs, while A-10 Warthogs and Apache helicopters targeted IRGC surface vessels with relentless force. The decisive strike came when Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the IRGC Navy, was eliminated, effectively ending Tehran’s blockade strategy.
With the U.S. maintaining total air supremacy, an international coalition led by the UK is now deploying advanced autonomous surface vessels (GARCs) and unmanned mine-hunting drones to clear the remaining hazards. While the immediate threat has been neutralized and transit is gradually resuming, the lingering danger of sea mines keeps the global energy market on edge.
