Pirate Software built his audience on expertise. Millions of people trusted Jason Thor Hall as the former Blizzard employee who knew how games actually get made. Then he refused to admit he was wrong, again and again, and the gaming community that built him turned on him.
In January 2025 he ran from a fight during a hardcore World of Warcraft raid, two other players lost their characters, and he refused to apologise. Months later came the backlash over Stop Killing Games, Ross Scott's European Citizens' Initiative to keep games people paid for playable after support ends. Thor had called it "used car salesman garbage" and said he'd actively tell people not to back it. Then Coding Jesus published a review of the Heartbound code, which Thor dismissed as bad faith, and leaked messages raised questions about his record-breaking April 2024 hype train. Thor and his moderator Kronos both deny wrongdoing, and no platform ruling or legal finding has been reported. The final chapter follows him into 2026, from his Indiecember showcase to his exit from Ashes of Creation and the messages he released to explain it.
