Upon Richard’s death in 1984, he left all of his personal writings to his late last wife. Richard had always kept diaries in the form of various pocketbooks that he would carry around with him. These were all passed onto his final wife, who released them to the public a few decades after his death. When these diaries were revealed to the public, they gave the world a much greater understanding of the many troubles the plagued Richard during his lifetime.

Most of the shame that plagued Richard during his life stemmed from two specific relationships. These were his relationship with his elder brother, and his relationship with Elizabeth Taylor. Richard’s elder brother was paralyzed during a drunken reunion and many have come to speculate that Richard was responsible.
