Banned from buying weapons under UN sanctions in 1977, South Africa built the Ratel 90, the world's first wheeled infantry fighting vehicle, and used it to outfight Soviet T-55 tanks at the Battle of the Lomba River in October 1987.
This is the full operational history of the SADF's most unlikely tank killer. From UN Resolution 418, to 61 Mechanised Battalion and the bushveld of southern Angola.
Built by Sandock-Austral from 1976 to 1987, around 1,381 Ratels were produced and exported to ten nations.
In Operation Moduler, twelve Ratel 90s of Charlie Squadron faced a Soviet-equipped FAPLA brigade with T-54s, T-55s, BMP-1s, and a full SA-8 missile battery. A wheeled IFV with a 1950s gun outfought the most produced tank in history. By the end of the campaign, an entire Angolan brigade had ceased to exist.
Decades before the LAV-25 and the Stryker, the Ratel proved wheels could fight. With wheeled IFVs back in the Ukraine debate in 2026, the lessons of the Border War matter again.
