The Basques are the oldest people in Europe that no one can fully explain. For over a century, scientists believed they were pure Ice Age survivors — a Paleolithic relic untouched by the great migrations that reshaped the rest of the continent. Then ancient DNA changed everything.
In this documentary, we trace the real genetic origins of the Basque people through three ancient ancestry layers, a Bronze Age steppe migration that reached even the Pyrenees, and one extraordinary event of genetic isolation that froze a population in time while Europe transformed around them. We also explore the deepest mystery of all: why is Euskara — the Basque language — the only surviving pre-Indo-European language in Western Europe, even though the DNA tells a different story?
The answer is older, stranger, and more layered than the national myth.
