For sixty years, hypersonic flight has been the province of rockets, missiles, and one-way X-planes that fly once and end up in a museum. Mach 5 with passengers aboard has always been the same promise, repeated in renderings and investor decks, and never once in metal. Heat wins. It always wins.
Now an eight-year-old company in California is flying real hardware at a pace almost nobody in aerospace can match, and it says it wants to take 20 people from New York to London in 90 minutes. There is just one problem. That aircraft appears nowhere on its own published roadmap, and the company no longer describes itself as building airliners at all.
This is the story of Hermeus, the strange ladder it is climbing one aircraft at a time, and why the most credible attempt at a hypersonic passenger plane in history is being made by a company that has quietly stopped promising one.
