The Big One. It’s the earthquake Californians have been warned about for decades.

Now, a new study is shedding light on just how much stress may be building beneath Southern California, finding parts of the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems are experiencing some of the highest stress levels seen in about a thousand years.

Researchers say the findings do not mean a major earthquake is about to happen and scientists still cannot predict exactly when the next big quake will strike.

But they say the research shows the region has the conditions needed to produce a powerful rupture in the future.
