Lubbock, Texas. September 7th, 1980. Three thousand people packed the old municipal auditorium for a Waylon Jennings hometown benefit on what would have been Buddy Holly's 44th birthday.
Earlier that year, Waylon had called Chuck Berry "a carnival act" in a magazine interview. "Duckwalk and cash up front. Put him in a beer joint in Lubbock with nothing but a guitar, and he'd last about two songs."
What Waylon didn't know was that Chuck Berry was sitting alone in the back row that night, hidden under a plain brown hat. When the crowd spotted him, Waylon invited him on stage to prove it. No band. No money. Just a guitar.
Chuck asked to borrow Waylon's guitar. Then he pulled something small out of his wallet that he had carried for 23 years, a secret from a 1957 tour bus in the segregated South, and a promise a skinny kid from Lubbock once made him.
What happened next left 3,000 people in tears and changed Waylon Jennings forever.
