In 2010, scientists extracted DNA from a finger bone found in a Siberian cave. They expected a Neanderthal. Instead, they found something no one knew existed — a third human species, now called the Denisovans. We knew their genome before we knew their face. We knew they lived across Asia before we found a single skull. And we know that their DNA is actively working in living people today — helping Tibetans breathe at altitude, helping Indigenous Americans fight pathogens, present in every person with Melanesian, Aboriginal Australian, or East Asian ancestry. This episode follows the full story: from that finger bone in Leipzig, through fifteen years of extraordinary discoveries, to the studies published in 2025 and 2026 that are still rewriting human evolution in real time.
