This is an educational vocal coach analysis of metal singer Ronnie James Dio performing “Mistreated” with Rainbow. The song was written by Ritchie Blackmore and originally recorded by Deep Purple in 1974.

In this breakdown, we explore the vocal technique, breath control, and musical storytelling that helped make Dio one of the most iconic voices in rock and heavy metal. From his powerful resonance and dramatic vibrato to his heroic phrasing and emotional conviction, Dio’s voice is both technically masterful and deeply expressive. We also look at how his background as a trumpet player may have influenced his breath support, and why his unique tone, efficiency, and storytelling ability make this performance such a masterclass in rock vocal performance.
